John first became interested in woodturning, when as a small boy he visited his grandfather’s workshop after school hours. His grandfather was a professional woodturner who even on retirement could always be found in his workshop. Apart from the odd occasion at school when he was permitted a few minutes on the school lathe, his desire to learn the craft remained unfulfilled.

After leaving school he served an apprenticeship as an electrical engineer, then in the early 70’s joined the Police Force. He was re-introduced to woodturning in the mid 90’s by a neighbour, Les Revell who had been one of the founding members of both the Hampshire and Test Valley (Andover) Woodturning Clubs. What began as a hobby then became a part-time occupation when he retired from the police due to health problems in 2000. Shortly afterwards he began working full-time as a turner in his home workshop. In 2003 he moved his workshop to the historic location of the Fairgound Craft and Design Centre, moving again in June 2006 to the current new larger premises.

Aware of the large time gap between first becoming interested in the craft and actually getting involved, he is always keen to assist any youngster who wishes to get started.
